Christian IV put his monogram on towns and buildings in a realm, which stretched from the River Elbe to the Barents Sea. During his reign – from 1588 to 1648 – a new era within the Danish-Norwegian monarchy began. The dominant position in Scandinavia was taken by Sweden, but the realm did experience internal progress, before misfortune washed over the borders. In this important period, the King was the crucial figure, tirelessly active from his rich youth to the poverty of his old age. He turned Copenhagen into a capital, by erecting buildings such as Rosenborg, Rundetarn and Borsen, and he was an admiral, a field marshall and a builder throughout the realms, and the founder of such market towns as Christianshavn, Soro, Chiristiansstad, Gluckstadt, Christiania, Christianssand and Kongsberg. Christian IV was a human king, who also possessed very majestic capabilities. This book follows his trace in Denmark, Norway and Germany – and at Rosenborg, Frederiksborg and Kronborg.
